There comes a moment in every believer’s journey when the question of identity becomes more than a theological concept… it becomes a lifeline. Understanding who we are in Christ is not just comforting; it is essential for survival in a world that constantly tries to rename us. The apostle Peter understood this tension well. He wrote to believers who were misunderstood, marginalised, and pressured to conform. Yet instead of shrinking back, Peter lifted their eyes to heaven and reminded them of a truth that could not be taken away: “You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession.”
This truth changed my life profoundly. I know what it feels like to be labelled by the world… by colleagues, by family, by people whose opinions echo in your mind long after the conversation ends. I know the ache of choosing obedience to God at the cost of acceptance from those closest to you. I know the sting of being misunderstood, the loneliness of walking away from what is familiar, and the fear of disappointing those you love.
But in the middle of that struggle, God opened His Word to me in a way that reshaped everything. He showed me that I was not defined by who walked away, but by Who called me. I was not less because others didn’t understand me. I was not strange, broken, or unworthy. I was-and am-a royal priesthood. A daughter of the King. Set apart, not sidelined. Different, not deficient. Chosen, not rejected.
And this is the truth I want to share with you: don’t let the world define you… let God.
1. The Royal Priesthood: A Heavenly Calling
- Chosen and Set Apart:
- Peter’s words in 1 Peter 2:9 were not poetic encouragement; they were a declaration of identity. He was speaking to believers who felt out of place in their culture—much like many of us do today. He reminded them that they were not ordinary people trying to survive; they were chosen vessels entrusted with heaven’s purpose.
- Just as priests in the Old Testament stood between God and the people, we now stand as intercessors… carrying the heart of God into the world and carrying the needs of the world before God. Our calling is not passive. It is active, sacred, and powerful.
- Access to God’s Presence:
- The royal priesthood grants us direct access to God. In the Old Testament, only the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies once a year. But now, we have direct, continual access to the throne of grace. (Hebrews 4:16).
- This means intimacy with God is not reserved for the spiritually elite. It is the inheritance of every believer. Our worship, our obedience, our surrendered lives… these are the spiritual sacrifices we offer as priests of the Most High.
2. Navigating Life’s Challenges with Priesthood Power
- Embrace Your Identity:
- As believers, we are not merely ordinary Christians; we are a holy nation, a chosen race, and a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9). Our identity is rooted in Christ’s work on our behalf.
- Priesthood power means recognizing that we have direct access to God through Jesus. We don’t need intermediaries; we can approach the throne of grace boldly (Hebrews 4:16).
- In life’s challenges, remember your identity: you are a minister of reconciliation, called to proclaim God’s excellencies and bring light to a dark world.
- Serve God in All Areas of Life:
- Our vocations—whether as bankers, pastors, teachers, or stay-at-home parents—are all part of our priestly service. Every task can be an act of worship.
- Martin Luther emphasised that all believers share in this spiritual estate. There is no “higher” or “lower” calling-only faithful obedience in whatever God has placed in your hands… We serve one another, united by baptism, faith, and the Gospel (1 Corinthians 12).
Hebrews 4:16 reminds us: “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” As women, we can approach that throne with confidence, knowing that we are part of a royal lineage. Our prayers are heard, our faith is potent, and our influence extends far beyond our immediate circumstances.
Scripture is clear about who God’s people are. “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession” (1 Peter 2:9). This is not poetic language meant to inspire confidence; it is a factual declaration rooted in God’s covenant purposes. When this truth is rightly understood, it dismantles fear, silences shame, and exposes comparison for what it is, a distraction from obedience. Our confidence does not come from self-worth or personal strength, but from being called, set apart, and commissioned by God Himself.
A priesthood is not a label bestowed for status. In Scripture, priests were those who belonged wholly to God, who carried responsibility, who lived consecrated lives, and who stood before Him on behalf of others. They were accountable for how they lived, what they spoke, and how they represented the holiness of the Lord. To be part of a royal priesthood means our lives are no longer our own. We are not governed by culture, emotion, or personal ambition, but by the Word of God and the authority of Christ.
This calling is not limited by gender, background, or personal history. In Christ, access to God is no longer restricted to a few; it has been opened to all who are redeemed by His blood (Hebrews 10:19–22). Every woman who belongs to Christ is called to live as one who bears His name… set apart, obedient, prayerful, and submitted to His lordship. This is not empowerment defined by the world, but authority that comes through surrender.
As royal daughters of the King, we do not carry His presence casually. Wherever we go… our homes, our workplaces, our communities… we are representatives of His kingdom. We intercede because Scripture commands it. We serve because Christ modelled it. We live differently because holiness is not optional for those who belong to God (1 Peter 1:15–16).
The world will attempt to define you by your past, your failures, or your usefulness. God defines you by His choice and His calling. Heaven has already spoken. The question is not whether you are called, but whether you will walk in obedience to that call.
Heavenly Father,
I thank You that I am chosen, set apart, and called by Your name. Thank You for making me part of a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a people belonging to You alone (1 Peter 2:9). Lord, help me to grasp this truth deep within my spirit so that fear loses its grip, shame is silenced, and the lies of comparison have no place in my life.
Father, teach me to live as a priest… holy, consecrated, and obedient to Your Word. Help me to carry Your presence wherever I go, in my home, my work, and my community. Fill me with boldness to intercede, humility to serve, and the light of Your glory to shine in all I do. Let my life reflect the reality that I belong to You and that Your kingdom is at work through me.
Lord, let me not be swayed by the world’s definitions, opinions, or expectations. Help me to stand firm in the calling You have placed upon my life. Remind me daily that heaven has claimed me, and Your Word has authority over every circumstance. Strengthen me to walk faithfully in my identity as Your daughter, to live fully in the authority and privilege of Your priesthood, and to glorify You in all things.
Father, may my life be a testimony that Your covenant is true, Your promises are sure, and Your love never fails. Empower me to live boldly, pray earnestly, and serve faithfully, until Your name is exalted and Your kingdom advanced throughout the world.
In the name of Jesus Christ, my High Priest and King, I pray.
Amen.
