Surrender: Letting Go of Control

Seasons SurrenderForgiveness Banner

Good morning, Ladies! I hope you all had a fantastic weekend filled with rest, joy, and moments that reminded you of God’s goodness. As I sit down to write this post, there’s a song playing softly on my computer, and the lyrics say, “I will follow You anywhere.” Every time I hear those words, my heart stirs with a deep reminder of the choice I made to follow Jesus, no matter where He leads me.

When I first answered His call, I had no idea where it would take me. The road wasn’t clear, and I couldn’t see the path ahead. But what I did know, with every ounce of my being, was that surrendering my life to the One who holds the future made me stronger than I ever could have imagined. It wasn’t about knowing every step or having all the answers—it was about trusting Him with everything, even the unknowns.

Surrendering my life wasn’t just a one-time decision. It’s a daily choice to lay down my own plans and desires and follow His leading, wherever it may lead. It’s a beautiful reminder that when we choose to follow Christ, we’re not alone. He walks with us through every season, and in surrender, we find a strength that only He can provide.

There are moments in our journey with Christ when the call to surrender doesn’t whisper – it roars. It comes in the form of a diagnosis we never saw coming, a relationship we can’t fix, a door that suddenly slams shut, or even the haunting silence when we cry out and heaven seems still. Surrender is not a passive act – it’s a powerful one. It is the laying down of our striving, our expectations, and even our identity when life doesn’t look like what we prayed for. It’s the open-handed release of the things we hold dearest: a dream, a child, a future, a control we never truly had.

As children of God, surrender isn’t about defeat – it’s about trust. It’s the holy exchange of our limited understanding for His infinite wisdom. It’s about standing at the edge of what we know and choosing to believe that even in this, even here, God is good. Surrender means giving up our right to know “why” in order to rest in the truth of Who – Who holds it all together.

And yet, surrender doesn’t end at letting go. Once we lay it all down at His feet, we are not left empty – we are filled. Once we surrender, we lean. We trust. We obey. We wait. And sometimes, we worship in the waiting. Surrender is the start of a new rhythm – one that trusts God in every season, not just the ones that feel light and easy. It is the spiritual posture that says: “I don’t have to understand the path, as long as I know the Shepherd.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 calls us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding, because in surrender, our steps are no longer ours to direct—they become a dance of obedience led by the One who sees the end from the beginning.

Surrender: Trusting God in Every Season

Life is made up of seasons – some filled with joy and abundance, others marked by trials and uncertainty. No matter the season, one truth remains: God calls us to surrender and trust Him fully. But what does it truly mean to surrender control and place our faith in His plan, even when the road ahead is unclear?

  • Letting Go of Control
    • Surrender is not about giving up; it is about yielding to the One who holds all things in His hands. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us:
    • “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
    • This passage teaches us that trusting God requires us to stop relying on our limited perspective. Instead, we must acknowledge Him in every step, believing that His ways are higher than ours.
  • Faith in the Midst of Worry
    • One of the greatest obstacles to surrender is worry. Jesus speaks directly to this in Matthew 6:25-34, urging us not to be anxious about our needs but to seek first the Kingdom of God. He reassures us that if God cares for the birds and the flowers, how much more will He care for us?
    • Surrender means releasing our worries into God’s hands and resting in His promises. It means choosing faith over fear, peace over panic, and obedience over self-reliance.
  • Trusting Through Every Season
    • In seasons of waiting – Trust that God is working even when you cannot see it.
    • In seasons of abundance – Remain humble and acknowledge that every blessing comes from Him.
    • In seasons of loss – Hold onto the hope that He is your comfort and strength.
    • In seasons of transition – Believe that He is leading you to something greater.

Surrender is not a once-off act but a daily decision to trust God over ourselves. It’s a quiet confidence that even when we don’t see the full picture, the Artist is still painting something beautiful. When we truly surrender, we stop fighting for control and start resting in the arms of the Father, who never lets go.

Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:25-34 not to worry about tomorrow, for each day has enough trouble of its own. He doesn’t say life will be without trouble – He promises that in the trouble, we can be at peace because He is with us. That is the foundation of surrender: not the absence of pain or uncertainty, but the presence of Christ in the middle of it.

So, what do we do after we surrender?

We trust. We obey. We wait on Him. We rest in His promises. And we walk forward – not with clenched fists, but with open hands, ready to receive whatever He knows is best.

Because surrender is never the end of the story. It’s the beginning of the life we were always meant to live – anchored not in our own ability to hold it all together, but in His unwavering faithfulness to carry us through every season.

Father God, I come before You knowing You see every part of me – what I carry, what I fear, what I can’t fix, and what I try so hard to hold together. Today, I choose to lay it all down. I surrender the parts of my life I don’t understand, the people I cannot control, and the outcomes I can’t predict.

Teach me, Lord, how to trust You when the path feels uncertain. Help me lean not on my own understanding, but in every step I take, acknowledge You – knowing You will direct my ways. Even when I don’t see what You’re doing, help me believe You are working.

When the waiting feels long, be my peace. When the letting go feels painful, be my comfort. When the silence feels heavy, be my hope. When fear tries to rise, be my anchor.

I surrender my plans for Your purpose, my pain for Your promise, my striving for Your stillness. I release it all into Your hands, knowing that Your hands are good and full of mercy.

Let this surrender not be an act of weakness but of worship. Make my heart steady in You. Help me to rest in Your timing, Your will, and Your way.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
