Reflecting The Character of God

Morning Ladies, here we are another morning of prayer and living in the hope that only Jesus Christ can give us. Today, I want to share something that I have been meditating on during my prayer mornings and that is the character of God and Discovering Joy in the Goodness of who God is.

As I was pondering our next prayer subject, I found myself swept away by the sheer joy of reflecting on God’s goodness and glory. Have you ever noticed how worship can flow through us when we lift up His name and declare who He is? It’s in these moments that our spirits connect with the truth that the God we serve is not just words on a page but a living, breathing Father who is deeply involved in our lives.

A Living Conversation with God

When I pray, especially when I focus on the character of God, I feel my spirit start to sing. It’s like my heart remembers that I’m speaking to a God who is not distant but is right here with me. He is the one who has the answers when my thoughts are tangled up and my heart is weary. In these moments, I experience the beauty of meditation on my King—a time when I pause to remember who He is and why He alone has the power to transform my life from worry to worship and from confusion to celebration.

Why Worship Changes Everything

Worship isn’t just something we do; it’s a place where we meet God. When we declare His character, we are reminded of His faithfulness and His promises. Our circumstances may not immediately change, but our perspective does. We begin to see our situations through the lens of His love and sovereignty.

Let’s take a moment to reflect on the goodness of God in our lives. Think about His faithfulness, His mercy, and His unchanging nature. Remember that He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. As we focus on Him, we find peace, joy, and strength to face whatever comes our way.

“The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.”

 Praying the Attributes of God

Life is filled with uncertainties, and our plans are written on the sand in low tide. The one thing that is never changing is the character of God, it is a steadfast anchor for our souls. As children of the most High God, we are invited to deepen our understanding of His nature through prayer, allowing the attributes of God to transform our hearts and minds.

Why Pray the Attributes of God?

  1. Refocusing Our Minds: When we pray the attributes of God, we shift our focus from our circumstances to His unchanging nature. This practice helps us see beyond our immediate challenges and align our thoughts with His eternal perspective. As Paul encourages us in Philippians 4:8, “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
  2. Building Our Faith: Meditating on God’s attributes—His love, mercy, power, and wisdom—builds our faith. When we declare God’s power, for example, we are reminded that nothing is too difficult for Him (Jeremiah 32:17). Praying His attributes strengthens our confidence in His ability to work in our lives.
  3. Transforming Our Lives: As we dwell on God’s character, we become more like Him. The Apostle Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 3:18 that as we contemplate the Lord’s glory, we “are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory.” Praying His attributes allows the Holy Spirit to shape our character to reflect His.

How to Pray the Attributes of God

  1. Start with Scripture: The Bible is rich in describing God’s character. Choose a verse highlighting an aspect of God’s character and meditate on it. For example, Psalm 145:8-9 speaks of His graciousness and compassion: “The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.   2. Personalize Your Prayer: As you pray, personalize the attribute of God you’re focusing on. If you’re praying about His faithfulness, you might say, “Lord, I praise You for Your faithfulness. Even when I am faithless, You remain true to Your promises. Help me to trust in Your unwavering love.”
  3. Incorporate Worship and Thanksgiving: Let your prayer be filled with worship and gratitude. Acknowledge God’s greatness and thank Him for how His attributes have been evident in your life. Worship turns our focus away from ourselves and magnifies His holy name.

Praying God’s attributes shifts our focus from the chaos of the world to the steadfastness of His nature.

Praying for the character of God in our lives is a powerful way to deepen our relationship with Him. As we meditate on His nature, our faith is strengthened, our lives are transformed, and our hearts are drawn closer to His. Let us make it a daily practice to reflect on His character, allowing His attributes/character to guide and inspire us in our journey of faith.

Heavenly Father, You are the God of all creation, the One who spoke the universe into existence. I praise You for Your infinite wisdom, which guides me through life’s challenges. Thank You for Your mercy that is new every morning and for Your love that never fails. Lord, remind me of Your strength when I am weak and Your peace when I am troubled. Help me to reflect Your character in my life, so that others may see Your glory through me. Amen.
