Growing as a Christian

God created us to grow. As babies, we are programmed to grow to a certain size and as children, we could not wait to be big. Just look at the expression on the face of a child who gets a “You’re growing so fast!”. As adults, we want to experience growth in our careers, status, relationships and all the facets of life that determines what success looks like.

1Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarrelling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans?

1 Cor 3:1-3

Paul admonishes the church in Corinth because they are not growing. He compares them to babies who cannot be fed solid food yet. The message is clear – as children of God, we must grow. Just like any parent, God will guide and encourage us to grow. We have to become mature Christians.

Easier said than done. Paul says we have to rid ourselves of worldly traits like jealousy and quarrelling. We have to grow to a point where being right does not matter.

God wants us to be in a place where worldly emotions and possessions no longer matter. Jesus says that we should grow in the depth of our relationship with Him and everything else will be taken care of.

Don’t let this make you uncomfortable. It’s already in our DNA. We are programmed to grow. You’ve got this.

Dear Lord Jesus, I admit that I am easily sidetracked by everything that the world has to offer. Father help me to stay focussed on You and only You. Guide me to grow and to mature as Your child so that I may experience the amazing love that you have for me. Amen.
