Let God be the Hero of Your Story

The earliest memory I have of my childhood, is of my parents’ battling alcohol addiction and the terror that it created for us as kids and them as adults. I would hide in the bushes with my brothers to avoid our home.

I remember a man who guarded over us where we slept under the tree. There was something about him that was different to other men. He was kind and I always felt safe and warm when He was close. You see as a seven-year-old girl no one had ever told me about Jesus, but I met Him under that tree.

I was lucky enough that people were placed in my life to teach me about who Jesus was. I learned how to pray and as a little girl, I started praying for my family. By the time I was sixteen, both my parents were free from the grip of alcohol and both of them became sincere children of God.

In time my dad became my hero – like all dads should be. When he passed away I got his bible and his notes. The deep love affair that he had with Jesus is plain to see in the poetry, songs and notes he wrote in the margin of his bible. The transformation and redemption that I witnessed in him was astonishing.

But the real hero in this story is my Saviour, my Redeemer – Jesus Christ. He is the hero in every story that I have to tell. Jesus guarded over me under that tree. Jesus changed my parents. Jesus came to my rescue when He interrupted two men who attacked and raped me. Jesus held my hand when I got cancer at 22. Jesus gave me a beautiful family. He gave me my husband and best friend and today we live a life that I could never have imagined.

Life still knocks me down, but my hero, Jesus, saves the day – every time.

Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for protecting me through all the bad that has happened in my life. Thank you for healing my heart and letting me live a wonderful life. Please let my story be the inspiration for the woman praying with me now to stand up from the thing that has been holding her down. Father, I pray that you change her circumstances in a miraculous way so that she may rise up and testify of Your goodness. Amen.
