Some of us have lived so long with shame, fear, and old wounds that we don’t even question them anymore. They feel normal. They feel familiar. But familiar doesn’t mean true. And today, before we go any further, I want to talk about the freedom Jesus already paid for… the freedom many of us still tiptoe around because it feels risky, uncomfortable, or too good to be true. If you’ve ever found yourself slipping back into chains that were broken at the cross, this is for you. Let’s talk about what it really means to choose freedom, even when the familiar feels safer.
The chains we learn to live with look a lot like Shame. Fear. Unworthiness. Old wounds that still sting even though the moment that caused them is long gone.
None of these chains belong to you. They haven’t belonged to you since the cross. Jesus broke them before you ever took your first breath. Unfortunately, as humans we still reach for things even when we know they broke us. Ladies we are incredibly good at choosing what’s familiar, even when it hurts, even when it limits us, even when it keeps us small.
Why? Because freedom feels risky. Freedom feels like stepping into a version of yourself you’ve never met. Freedom feels like letting go of the story the enemy wrote and picking up the one God has been holding out to you all along.
And that kind of freedom requires trust. It requires surrender. It requires choosing what is true over what is comfortable. Choosing freedom means choosing the woman God says you are… not the woman your past, your pain, or your fear keeps trying to convince you to be.
It means choosing the version of yourself who actually believes she is loved without conditions. The version who steps into calling without waiting to feel “ready.” The version who stops rehearsing the lies spoken over her and starts living the truth God has declared from the beginning.
That woman is not far away. She is not hidden. She is not unreachable.
She is one choice away… again and again and again.
Because freedom is not a one-time moment. It’s a daily decision. A daily refusal to go back to what Jesus already freed you from. A daily “yes” to the Spirit and a daily “no” to the slavery you’ve already walked out of.
Paul didn’t say, “Try to feel free.” He didn’t say, “Wait until you’re confident.” He didn’t say, “See if you can work your way into freedom.”
He said:
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” ~ Galatians 5:1 NIV
Stand firm. Do not go back.
That’s the instruction. Not a feeling… a choice.
A choice to believe God over your emotions. A choice to trust His Word over your history. A choice to step forward even when fear whispers that you should stay where it’s familiar.
Freedom will always feel unfamiliar at first. But familiar doesn’t mean safe. Familiar doesn’t mean true. Familiar doesn’t mean God.
You were created for freedom. You were redeemed for freedom. You were called into freedom. So today, choose it. Choose the truth. Choose the woman God says you are. Choose the life Jesus died to give you.
And when the old chains call your name… when shame tries to creep back in, when fear tries to tighten its grip, when unworthiness tries to settle on your shoulders… remember this:
They are broken. They have no authority. They only have the power you hand back to them.
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
~ Galatians 5:1
Stand firm. Do not return. Walk in the freedom that has already been paid for.
You are not fighting for freedom.. you are fighting from freedom. Christ already secured it. The chains you keep noticing, the ones that feel so heavy and so familiar, are not locked. They haven’t been for a long time. But the enemy is clever, and he knows that if he can convince you to stay where it’s familiar, he never has to actually bind you. You’ll bind yourself.
But you don’t belong to fear anymore. You don’t belong to shame. You don’t belong to the old story that told you you’re not enough.
You belong to Jesus. And belonging to Jesus means you get to walk in what He paid for… even when it feels uncomfortable, even when it stretches you, even when it asks you to trust Him more than you trust your own familiar.
Freedom is not a feeling. It’s a choice. A choice to stand firm. A choice to not go back. A choice to believe what God says, even when your emotions try to drag you into old patterns.
Galatians 5:1 isn’t a suggestion. It’s a reminder and a warning wrapped in one:
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
Stand firm… because freedom is yours. Do not go back, because the past has nothing new to offer you. Walk forward, because God is already in the future He’s calling you into.
And when you feel yourself slipping, when the familiar starts calling your name, when the lies feel louder than the truth, pause and remember this:
You are one choice away from stepping back into who God says you are. Not once. Not twice. But every single day.
Father, I come before You with my hands open and empty, because I’m tired of holding onto things You already broke off of me. I’m tired of calling familiar chains “normal.” I’m tired of letting old stories decide who I am. Today, I choose to stand in the freedom Jesus paid for, even if it feels unfamiliar, even if it stretches me, even if it asks me to trust You more than I trust my own feelings.
Lord, You see every place where shame still tries to whisper. You see every corner where fear still hides. You see the moments when unworthiness tries to settle on my shoulders like a weight I’m supposed to carry. But You also see the truth: those chains are not locked. They haven’t been since the cross. So I ask You to help me stop reaching for what You already removed.
Teach me to recognize the lies quickly. Teach me to reject them boldly. Teach me to choose freedom even when the familiar feels safer.
Holy Spirit, remind me who I am when I forget. Remind me that I am loved without conditions. Remind me that I am called, even when I don’t feel ready. Remind me that the story You wrote over my life is stronger than anything the enemy ever tried to write.
Give me the courage to step into the version of myself that You see, the one who walks in truth, the one who stands firm, the one who refuses to go back to what You delivered me from. Let Your Word be louder than my emotions. Let Your truth be heavier than my history. Let Your voice be the one I follow, even when everything in me wants to retreat to what feels familiar.
Lord, I choose freedom today. Not because I feel brave, but because You are faithful. Not because I have it all figured out, but because You already finished the work.
Your Word says, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then…” So help me stand. Help me stay. Help me refuse the yoke of slavery that no longer belongs to me.
And when I stumble, pull me back into You. When I forget, remind me. When I hesitate, steady me again. When the old chains call my name, let me hear Yours louder.
Thank You for freedom that is bold. Thank You for grace that does not run out. Thank You for a love that does not change its mind about me.
I choose You. I choose truth…
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
