Love

1 Corinthians 13:13 – And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

As I prayed over this verse I was reminded of why this verse has been so important to me all these years. This verse sums up the whole gospel of Jesus Christ to me.

1 Cor 13:1-2 – Love is the most superior to all of the gifts. Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love. I have become a sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. Love does not store up the wrongs of others, love forgets the pain of past mistakes the memory of any wrong doing it has received. Love will put away the hurts of the past instead of clinging to them.

Paul isn’t trying to make us choose, between faith, hope, and love instead he emphasizes the point that without love as the motive and goal, the gifts are meaningless distractions. If you lose love, you lose everything.

I reflect on God’s Word tonight through the lens of my own ups and downs, victories and losses and I realize in the heart of my faith and hope, that I am nothing without this love. The love that can only be perfected inside Christ.
